Waterfall Trail at Platte River State Park

April 29, 2020

A close up of the waterfall at Plat River State Park

The Waterfall Trail at Platte River State Park is one of our favorite trails in the Omaha area!

This picturesque trail offers visitors a pleasant walk through the trees, relaxing waterfall, and a path along a stream full of rocks to jump across.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please make sure you are following recommended social distancing practices while you are out.

Platte River State Park is located between Omaha and Lincoln on Highway 66. In addition to the trails, families will also love the spray park, observation towers, and lake. Visitors will need a daily or annual park permit.

The entrance to the Waterfall Trail is just to the left of the main entrance within the park. There is a small parking lot, with restrooms near the lot.

Families will love the picturesque trail through the trees that winds around along a stream. Listen to the trickling water, croaking frogs, and trees blowing in the wind, and keep your eyes out for deer nestled in the forest!

10 Ideas for Easter Fun at Home

April 4, 2020

A close up of a chick shaped Easter Basket.

Create memories with many activities for Easter fun at home this year!

Find the Omaha Easter Egg Hunt Guide, including many Drive-Through and To-Go Experiences!

Kick-off Easter Morning with a House-wide Egg Hunt!

While the kids are sleeping, hide Easter eggs around the house so that when they wake up on Easter morning, the house is filled with colorful eggs to seek and find! Leave their Easter baskets outside their bedroom doors so they can get started right away.

A group of washcoth bunnies outside.

Make Washcloth Bunnies

With just a washcloth and rubber band, children can create a cute bunny. Visit Crafts By Amanda for an easy step-by-step pictorial on how to fold your bunny. Then, kids can use their imaginations to decorate their bunnies with stuff you have around the house, like googly eyes, hair ties, craft foam, felt scraps, ribbon, pom-poms, buttons, etc.

Create a Stained Glass Chalk Drawing

Grab some chalk and tape and create a beautiful Stained Glass Chalk Drawing on your driveway or sidewalk. Add a Cross in the middle for a beautiful Resurrection Stained Glass Chalk Drawing.

Attend Easter Service Virtually

Many local churches are live-streaming their Easter Services so that you can join in the safety of your home.

Dress up in Easter Best and Take Family Photos

Have everyone dress up in their Easter dresses or nicer clothes and hire a photographer to take pictures as part of the Front Steps Project or invite your neighbor to take some family photos in your front yard and text them to you.

Build a Bunny House

With just toothpicks and mini marshmallows (stale marshmallows work best), kids can build a house for their bunny or chick. Not only is this STEM project fun, but it challenges young minds as they explore the concept of support and discover how many marshmallows and toothpicks it takes to create a structure that will stand up! Find more toothpick and marshmallow challenges here.

A close up of a Peep Dessert.

Make “Bunnies/Chicks in the Dirt” Ice Cream Parfaits

No celebration is complete without a treat! For Easter, make cute Easter-themed dirt sundaes with the kids to celebrate! Or better yet, the kids can make these fun desserts themselves! Just top your favorite ice cream, yogurt or pudding with crushed Oreos to create the “dirt” your marshmallow Peep sits on. Decorate with sprinkles, jellybeans, or anything else you like!

My daughter made this one with Chocolate ice cream. We had mint Oreos in our pantry, so she used those. Separating the cream from the cookie, she crushed the cookies and I melted the cream a little in the microwave (10-20 sec.). Then, she layered everything like a parfait, topping the crushed Oreos with dribbles of cream to look like grass, jellybeans, and a Cotton Candy Peep Chick.

Play Easter Games

Baggo: With duct tape, make two circles on the floor. Then, kids can toss stuffed bunnies, trying to get them in the circles.

The Egg Game: Write an action on slips of paper and put them in plastic Easter eggs. Kids each pick 6 eggs from the basket. Set a timer for 2 minutes and see who can complete the most actions in that time. OR, say “Go!” and see who can complete all their actions the fastest.

Family Movie Time: Watch an Easter Movie

Break out the popcorn and Easter candy, snuggle up under a fluffy blanket, and watch the family movie HOP (PG) – it’s on Netflix now! Check out Common Sense Media’s review of HOP.

We LOVE watching movies with our kids, and especially enjoy going to Marcus Theatres!

I love the ease of using the app to purchase our tickets and select our seats. My kids love the comfortable reclining seats, and the movable armrest so we can snuggle like on our couch at home!

Our favorites are the $5 Tuesdays with a FREE complimentary-size popcorn for Magical Movie Rewards Members, and other specials they have throughout the year!

Enchanted Tales at Omaha Marcus Theatres

$6 Disney Classics Return to Marcus Theatres January 24-February 17

That’s because they’re bringing back the Enchanted Tales Film Series January 24-February 17!

This season’s line-up features a collection of classic Disney films including “Aladdin,” “The Lion King,” “Sleeping Beauty” and “Pocahontas” on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays!

Enchanted Tales is the perfect way to introduce your family to the magic of beloved Disney films the way they were originally meant to be seen — on the big screen!

Better yet, admission to any film in the series is just $6 per person — get your tickets online or in theatre!

(Pro tip: Click here to download a coloring sheet, have your kids color in their favorite character, then bring it to Marcus Theatres during your Enchanted Tales show to receive a FREE complimentary-size popcorn!)

$6 Movie Line-up

  • January 24-26: “Aladdin”
  • January 31-February 2: “The Lion King”

  • February 14-17: “Pocahontas”

(Pro tip: The series features one “bonus” day on Monday, February 17 — President’s Day! There’s no better way to spend a day away from school than the movies.)

Why These Classic Disney Movies are Even Better on the Big Screen

1.Seeing where it all began with the original animated movies that inspired last year’s hit live-action remakes.

2. Sharing the experience watching beloved favorites from “Disney’s renaissance” in the theatre — just like you did — with your kids. And have you EVER seen 1959’s “Sleeping Beauty” on the big screen?!

3. THAT MUSIC. These films feature three award-winning songs, from “A Whole New World” to “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” to “Colors of the Wind” — and they all sound even better in a movie theatre.

What are you waiting for? Get your tickets, download your coloring sheets and we’ll see you at Marcus Majestic of Omaha, Marcus Twin Creek and Marcus Village Pointe Cinemas soon!

Family Fun at Arbor Day Farm & Lied Lodge in Nebraska City

October 9, 2019

A family posing for a picture in front of the welcome sign at Arbor Day Farm.

This post was sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation. One of our contributors, Joanna, recently visited Arbor Day Farm and Lied Lodge with her family!

Looking for a quick family getaway?

Just an hour drive from Omaha, Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City offers one-of-a-kind experiences to keep the entire family entertained! The NEW Treetop Village opened this fall and is worth the trip itself, but you’ll also want to make sure you check out the Nature Explore Classrooms, the Discovery Ride, and the unique shopping and dining options available onsite. Click here to book your own family getaway today!

Many thanks to Arbor Day Farm who is a Featured Listing in our Omaha Area Pumpkin Patch Guide and Omaha Area Apple Orchard Guide.

Get a glimpse of all of the Family Fun you can have at Arbor Day Farm here!

Three little girls sitting in front of a tree at Arbor Day Farm.

Arbor Day Farm’s Tree Adventure kept my kids busy for hours! They loved building, climbing, and making music in the Nature Explore Classroom. This area is fun and accessible to kids of all ages, so it will definitely be a crowd pleaser for any family!

Children looking at a sign at Arbor Day Farm.

Children exploring the grounds at Arbor Day Farm.

Girls coloring at Arbor Day Farm.

The Tree Adventure has lots of little “extras” to keep kids engaged. Mine loved following the tracks on the ground, guessing which animal they belonged to, and then checking the signs to see if they were correct. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled because there are also several stops along the path with fun play equipment like a slide and zip-line!

Children walking through a tree walk at Arbor Day Farm.

Girls posing for a picture in the tree walk at Arbor Day Farm.

Treetop Village was at the top of our bucket list, and it did not disappoint! Our entire family loved scaling the various kinds of rope bridges and checking out each of the eleven treehouses. Book now to check out Treetop Village for yourself!

I think we all agreed that the WonderNet (think GIANT trampoline) was a highlight of the weekend! I’m not sure our kids have ever seen their parents jump like that before!

Just remember to wear closed-toed shoes! Also know that if you exit the course via slide or platform, you will need to start over at the beginning. On a busy day, this could mean waiting in line again.

A family on a waggon ride at Arbor Day Farm.

The Discovery Ride was one of my personal favorites! It was very interesting to hear about the history of the property and J. Sterling Morton while taking a wagon ride through the beautiful Arbor Day Farm forest. It was also a great opportunity to rest our legs for a bit and grab a quick snack (some delicious apples of course)!

A little girl picking an apple at Arbor Day Farm.

A young boy eating an apple at Arbor Day Farm.

Speaking of apples, we couldn’t turn down a chance to head into the orchard and pick a bag for ourselves. We nabbed a hayrack ride out to the rows with the ripest apples and found some beauties!

A fall display with a sign that reads, \"Pumpkin Patch\" at Arbor Day Farm.

Apple House Market was the most adorable (and tastiest) stop of our weekend. We ate an amazing BBQ lunch at Porter’s and grabbed some chocolate dipped caramel apples and wine as gifts for some family back home.

A large outdoor seating area at Arbor Day Farm.

After adventuring through the trees, we were ready to relax and unwind at the gorgeous Lied Lodge and Conference Center. The nature-inspired hotel is an easy walk from Arbor Day Farm and offers the most spectacular views of the property. My kids were most impressed with the delicious breakfast buffet at Timbers and the Olympic-sized indoor pool!

Lied Lodge and Arbor Day Farm were a perfect pair for a fun family getaway! Start planning your trip today!
