Family Education Program at Heron Haven
Heron Haven is offering a 2nd Saturday education programs.
All programs are 10 – 11:30 a.m. unless otherwise listed.
May 13th – Birds and Bats! May is Migratory Bird Month! Omaha sits in an important flyway. Come listen to the music of our native birds as well as those just passing through in our forest and wetlands. The Omaha Youth Birding Club, affiliated with the Audubon Society will lead our hike. Free bird-loving materials from the NE Games and Parks Commission. Kids make and take a bird mask puppet. Visit with the Batmen, Bat Exclusion Experts; we love bats but not in our attics. Learn why bats are so important for the community, our farmers and the eco-system. FREE elderberry seedlings and wildflower seeds from Papio- NRD.
June 10th -Bugs buzzing in our ears, Bugs in the water, bugs under logs, beautiful bugs! How are dragonflies like helicopters? Come explore under the waters of our wetlands by using dip nets. Discover what these tiny creatures can tell us about our water quality. Hurray for monarchs and pollinating insects! Kids can play a Pollinator Game and even taste pollinator-made fruits and vegetables. (Did you know that for every 3 bites of food we eat,we should thank a pollinator?) Yummy! Try your hand at fly casting with a member of Trout Unlimited. FREE Award winning The Nature Connection by Clare Walker Leslie to those participating in a mini-workshop about the book from 10-10:15.
July 8th – Night Hike – Time Change 7:30-8:30 P.M. The wetlands are a magical place at night. The sight of a heron silhouetted against the evening sky is truly an unforgettable moment. The sounds and hops of the bullfrogs vibrate the still waters. Let’s investigate the difference between a frog and a toad. FREE Award winning The Nature Connection by Clare Walker Leslie to those participating in a mini-workshop about the book from 7:15-7:30. Come have some lemonade and walk on the wild side!
August 12th – Green and growing in nature ….What you call a common weed may be someone’s or some animal’s favorite plant or flower. Plants and flowers add vibrant color to our world and fun shapes and sizes that create delightful patterns. And don’t forget all the delicious smells! Come walk with Miss Janet, a Master Gardener, and her Heron Haven friends to explore the world of plants in Heron Haven’s gardens and along the trails. We’ll especially look for flowers that attract pollinator insects. Painting materials will be in the butterfly garden; come create your own Renoir!
