America 250: American History Told Through Mexican American Eyes

José Garcia from Humanities Nebraska will discuss the relevance of Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day, Hispanic Heritage Month, Día de los Muertos, Día de los Niños and other commemorations and how they have crossed over to American mainstream culture.

Celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with the Omaha Public Library! This year we’re celebrating the ways America has changed over the last 250 years through a year-long lecture series. Each month we’ll offer a different presentation from local experts on American history, culture, or experience.

This is a free event for adults, teens and kids over the age of 10. Registration is encouraged but not required.

Space Race Escape Room

Houston, we have a problem! Your space mission has gone off course, and it’s up to your crew to solve puzzles themed around the historic space race and real space facts. Work together to crack codes, explore the solar system, and complete your mission before time runs out!

No prior knowledge is necessary to participate.

This is a free event for children ages 8-12.

Botna Bend Pancake Feed

Every spring, Botna Bend park rangers Jon Fenner and Cory Thomas and their staff tap the silver maple trees that call the park home and collect their sweet sap to make homemade maple syrup. You can taste the delicious fruits of their labor by joining us for our annual Pancake Feed!

  • Grilled pancakes and sausage will be served with our homemade maple syrup along with coffee & orange juice from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., so don’t be late! 
  • Breakfast is free, but free-will donations are gratefully accepted and will be used to fund Botna Bend Park projects and improvements.
  • A $3 per vehicle entry fee or Pottawattamie Conservation membership is required to enter the park.

Make sure to explore the park after you get some grub. Say hi to our elk and bison herds, take a hike on one of our wilderness trails, or take in the views of the West Nishnabotna River Water Trail.

Omahawks Labor Day Air Show

Join the Omahawks at Hawk Field at Standing Bear Lake (138th and Fort) for their 2026 Labor Day Air Show on Monday, September 7th from 11:45 am to 4:00 pm. Parking and admission is free. There is plenty of seating available. Food and drinks are available for purchase. Proceeds benefit Make-A-Wish Nebraska. 

Omaha Children’s Museum: Ciao Bambini!

Get ready to experience the heart and soul of Italy like never before at Omaha Children’s Museum through our newest cultural exhibit Ciao Bambini! This immersive, educational experience is designed to transport children and their families to the enchanting world of Italy, where history, art, and culture come to life.

From the rolling hills of Tuscany to the historic streets of Rome, young learners will explore this timeless country comparing the similarities and differences between their lives and those of children in the country of Italy.

Ciao Bambini! is a nationally traveling exhibit created by The Magic House, St. Louis
Children’s Museum in collaboration with the St. Louis Italian community. The exhibit is made possible by the generous support of Bill and Sally Canfield and Linda and Jesse Hunter.

America in Color: Made in the USA, Film Screening

Join us for a series of screenings from the Smithsonian Channel celebrating and exploring America’s 250th through a variety of subjects! 

On the first Sunday of the month, one film in the series is shown on the big screen at 1PM in the Stanley and Dorothy Truhlsen Lecture Hall. The film is included with regular museum admission and free to members. 

At the turn of the 20th century, 29 million Americans are working and 40% of them are farmers. Over the decades, factories expand like never before, two world wars speed up technological change, and by the 1950s, American workers have the highest wages and consumer power of any country in the world. This is the story of the men and women who built the American Dream, presented entirely in color through digitally remastered archival footage and home movies.

Carter’s Village Pointe Grand Re-Opening

Celebrate the grand re-opening of Carter’s at Village Pointe with fun for the whole family! Join Carter’s September 3–7 for special activities throughout the week, including KiwiCo projects, face painting, custom patches, and gourmet pops from Frios. Kids can get creative, enjoy a sweet treat, and celebrate the newly reopened store! Activities take place from 11 AM–1 PM on select days.

Monarch Tagging – FREE drop-in program

Flutter over to the garden on Saturday, September 5 from 9 a.m. to noon for a monarch tagging event. Each fall, monarch butterflies set out on an extraordinary journey traveling thousands of miles to overwintering sites in Mexico. By gently capturing, tagging, and releasing these butterflies, researchers are able to track their migration, study survival rates, and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges they face along the way.

Join experts from AAZK Omaha Chapter at the Quinn Oasis and Amphitheater to see this fascinating process up close. Learn more about monarchs, witness the tagging process, and discover how a small sticker can play a big role in conservation research.

Mark your calendars and get ready for a spectacular night in the sky because the postponed Fremont fireworks show has been rescheduled for Saturday, September 5th during Labor Day Weekend! 🎉
