One word: Excitement.

From the model rooms of Star Wars to the cityscape of Kansas City, LEGOLAND Discovery Center in Kansas City was fun for the whole family!

A close up of a Lego city at Legoland Discovery Center in Kansas City.

We began the day playing on the Kingdom Quest laser ride, a favorite the whole family can enjoy. We loved challenging each other to see who could get the highest score! The flying chariot at Merlin’s Apprentice, where guests pedal to go higher and higher, was also a highlight for the kids. It was helpful that we arrived right when they opened, going before the crowds that are typical later in the afternoon.

LEGO Miniland was full of intricate replicas of popular Kansas City landmarks and city skyline. The kids loved the interactive race track, and pushing the buttons on the displays of the Wizard of Oz to see the wicked witch ‘melting’.

This year, they also have a special Miniland Model Display of Star Wars Episode II! The amazing design and detail are incredible to see. As parents, this was our favorite part, really looking at each building and seeing what it took to create the final display.

The kids loved the play area, full of adventure through climbing nets and slides. The man staffing the play land was especially sweet, taking care of the kids and making sure a parent was present when they entered and left the play area. This was especially important when there was a large amount of people around.

The Quake station tested your building skills. You can build anything you want and hit the button to simulate a earthquake and see if your building can hold up to the shaking.

The Race Track, one of the most popular areas,  featured 2 tracks that you can go head to head with others that have built cars from a vast range of blocks and wheels. The kids had a blast racing their cars down the ramps with some jumping over the finish line! It was fun to see the interaction of the parents with their kids working together to create different shaped cars.

The 4D Cinema featured two fun movies that made you feel like you were part of the action with the 3-D glasses, and wind, rain, and snow providing a cool experience. Be prepared to get a tiny bit wet!

LEGOLAND Discovery Center also has a Duplo area for the smaller kids, and has birthday rooms and a café. Every hour, a Master Builder Academy is also offered for those who want to build a small model with one of the staff.

We had a wonderful experience at the LEGOLAND Discovery Center in Kansas City!

Imagine seeing thousands of sea creatures miles from any ocean? At Sea Life Aquarium Kansas City, experience a beautiful display of starfish, sharks, seahorses, rays, jellyfish, and more!

Upon entering, kids are given a card for the Quiz Trail where they can find and answer 9 questions throughout the aquarium. They enjoyed finding the clues and learning interesting tidbits about the sea life.

A highlight was the Touch Pool, where we could touch a sea star, hermit crab, star fish, and more! The guide answered questions and helped us get over our fear of touching these intricate animals. It was amazing to experience how these creatures feel – some looked soft, but felt like rocks, where others were smooth.

The Ocean Tunnel was full of sharks, rays, turtles, and colorful tropical fish! It was fun to be surrounded by these amazing creatures!

My husband’s favorite was the Jellyfish Display and the backlights in the exhibits. They are so graceful in the water but we would not like to meet them face the face in the ocean!

The huge Stingrays were fun to watch as they glide through the water. It was cool to see them from the top, while standing on the upper deck with a window in the floor.

The Claw Area was very interesting, where you can learn about the anatomy of crabs and see how large they can get! The Japanese Spider Crabs were huge!

Coming around the corner to see this guy looking at you provided a little surprise!

In the gift shop, the kids enjoyed playing in the Kid Zone, where they also received a medal for completing all the questions on the Quiz Trail.

Kansas City’s Union Station – Fun for the Whole Family!

August 12, 2013

A close up of the sign for Kansas City\'s Union Station.

This summer, we enjoyed one of our first family vacations. A large flag hanging in a long hall of windows at Kansas City\'s Union Station.Kansas City was a perfect destination, not too long of a road trip for the little people, but filled with enough fun and adventure that makes us wanting to return again soon.

One of our main stops was Union Station, Kansas City’s fully restored landmark. This beautiful building now houses restaurants, shops, and many fun attractions.

Science City

Science City was an amazing adventure for our entire family.  It is FULL of hands-on science activities and exhibits, engaging kids and adults of all ages for hours. It is spacious enough where we were able to interact with activities on our own and did not feel crowded, even though it was a busy Friday with a summer camp going on.

Science City KC

Our kids loved the Kinderlab, perfectly suited for their little hands and bodies. We watched snakes being fed in The Nature Center, dug in the Dinosaur Dig Site, crawled through the underground pipes, played the piano with our feet, simulated flying through the air in a helicopter, played in a treehouse, and watched other visitors try the Sky Bike, suspended on a highwire 30 feet above the ground. Mr. E Hotel challenged us with more than 21 different illusions.

Plus, with our Omaha Children’s Museum, we received Free Admission as part of their Reciprocal Membership Program!

Model Railroad Experience

A close up of a model train display at Kansas City\'s Union Station.

No visit to Union Station is complete without a visit to the Model Railroad Experience. See 8,000 square feet of toy trains including tiny N-scale model trains to the big G-scale trains. The Model Railroad Experience is FREE with any Union Station ticket!

Real Pirates

Real Pirates, a traveling exhibition from National Geographic, tells the story of The Whydah, and her conversion from slave ship to one of the most successful pirate ships in the early 1700s. The Whydah is the first fully authenticated pirate ship discovered in U.S. waters.

A text for the Real Pirates story at Kansas City\'s Union Station.

Upon entering, visitors watch a brief movie describing the background story behind the Real Pirates. This leads to a unique introduction to the exhibit, where you feel as if you are part of the story, learning about the pirates who were on the ship, how they lived, their backgrounds, and how they interacted with one another on the ship. ‘Real’ pirates walk around sharing their own tales and answering questions.

In this interactive exhibit, visitors will see a gallery of artifacts including real pirate coins, hoist the Jolly Roger, learn to tie nautical knots, walk through a ship replica, and learn the science behind restoring these artifacts.

I would personally recommend this exhibit for adults and older children who can better understand the history behind The Whydah. Visitors also have the option of purchasing a wand which might be helpful in following the exhibit.

Visiting Real Pirates:

  • June 22nd through January 5th, Hours
  • Tickets range from $14.50-$18.95, with special discounts for members

Disclosure: Many thanks to Union Station who provided tickets for my family to attend Real Pirates. All opinions are my own. See disclosure and privacy policy here.
