DIY Tree Decorating Seminar

November 12, 2025

Decorating the Christmas tree is one of our most cherished holiday traditions, and the beautiful tree becomes the backdrop for so many more – taking family photos, discovering Santa’s gifts, curling up on the sofa to admire the twinkling color. In the next demonstration in our DIY series, Visual Merchandiser Andrea Hansen will lead you through the design process she uses to transform an unadorned tree into a stunning Christmas centerpiece for your home.

Every Christmas tree is as unique as the people who decorate it. Whether your tree is formal with a carefully selected theme or loaded with your family’s priceless treasures, Andrea’s simple step-by-step process will tie everything into a beautiful, unified display. It’s all about the layering – Andrea will show you how she adds various décor elements – lifelike evergreens, berries, iced branches, ornaments, and ribbon – one at a time to add texture, dimension, and style. And when she’s done, she’ll do it again – twice – showing three different design themes to spark new creativity in your tree-decorating this year.

This seminar is free to attend and no pre-registration is required.

Christmas Bird Count

November 12, 2025

Are you a beginning birder looking to improve your skills? Are you interested in citizen science? Join us at Fontenelle Forest and participate in the 126th Annual Christmas Bird Count!

The Christmas Bird Count is a bird count that takes place every year around the holiday season! The Christmas Bird Count has been happening since 1900, and this year you can help! Join on a naturalist-guided bird count on the trails or boardwalk near the Nature Center. They will be hiking snow or shine, so make sure you come dressed for the weather! They’ll start with a brief history of the CBC, then hit the trails with a naturalist! Naturalists will lead hikes out to the Boardwalk or surrounding trails, but you can also opt to count birds inside by the bird feeders. They have binoculars available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis, but we encourage you to bring your own!

After the count is finished, They will have hot chocolate and coffee in the Forest Room as we tally our results! This is a family-friendly event, and we’ll also have crafts and coloring pages for children available.

This event will start with a brief presentation about the Christmas Bird Count, then will break into our hiking groups and hit the trails! Refreshments, crafts, and tallying our results will take place after the hike.
