FREE KETV Family Drive-Thru Festival 2020

One of our favorite Holiday events is the KETV FREE Family Festival.

Part of the Omaha Holiday Lights Festival, this year’s FREE KETV Family Festival will be held as a festive drive-through experience at the Omaha Police Mounted Patrol Barn on Sunday, December 6, 2020, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m!

FREE KETV Family Festival

The 2020 KETV FREE Family Drive-Thru Festival will be a little different from previous years but hands-on activities are still part of the event.

The drive-through experience will include picking up craft kits to do as a family, holiday characters and Santa, Police Officers on their horses, and holiday entertainment – all in the warmth and safety of your vehicle. The first 500 vehicles will receive a complimentary Paddington Bear book, courtesy of Omaha Public Library.

Upon returning home, families can enjoy online demo videos to put the craft kits together, a virtual tour of The Durham Museum, and virtual storytimes with Santa at the Omaha Children’s Museum and with librarians at the Omaha Public Library!

Location: Omaha Police Mounted Patrol Barn, 615 Leavenworth St., Omaha. Guests should approach the Patrol Barn from Leavenworth Street.
 

Shine On!

Volunteers will be on-hand to collect food donations for the Shine the Light on Hunger campaign, so bring nonperishable food with you if you wish to contribute. All contributions are greatly appreciated!

Earth Day Omaha – 4/18, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., FREE

  • The free event features exhibit booths, children’s activities, demonstrations and short speaker sessions, plus live music from top local bands and food from area vendors. All activities are designed to educate and inspire attendees to live green and healthy at home and at work.
  • Climb A State Champion Tree at Earth Day – 4/18, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Party for the Planet at the Omaha’s Zoo & Aquarium – 4/19, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

  • Celebrate Earth Day and discover ways you can help save our planet. Stop by a conservation-themed booths, listen to Omaha Street Percussion perform music on recycled trash cans and buckets, receive gate gifts, provided by Oriental Trading Company, while supplies last. Included with regular admission.

Drum Craft at Abrahams Branch – 4/19, 11 a.m.

  • Create and decorate a drum using recycled materials (provided by the Library) to beat during the puppet show. Yours to keep! 

Earth Day Treasure Hunt at Pottery Barn Kids – 4/21 – 4/27

  • Join in this eco-inspired treasure hunt and explore the store for green clues and fun facts. Those who find them all can make everyday Earth Day with a plantable bookmark!

Earth Day at Florence Community Center – 4/22

  • Stop in anytime during the day to learn about Terra Cycling, and make a craft out of recycled materials.

Incredible Edible Landfill at Millard Branch – 4/22, 4 p.m., Registration required, Ages 7-12

  • Come explore recycling in a fun (and tasty) way! Participants will use pudding, candy, cookies, cereal, and other tasty treats to create an edible landfill.

Celebrate Arbor Day at La Vista Community Center – 4/23, 10 a.m.

  • Come for an outdoor story time and Arbor Day tree planting followed by Preschool Playtime in the gym! There will be a special gift for all children who attend. No registration required.

Annual Arbor Day Celebration in Nebraska City – 4/24-4/26

  • Celebrate the tree planter’s holiday where it all began – in Nebraska City, Nebraska. The entire community will mark the internationally-celebrated holiday with a parade, craft show, and more. Plus, at Kimmel Orchard, enjoy free hayrack rides, wine tasting, apple doughnuts, and more.

Arbor Day Family Celebration at Arbor Day Farm Tree Adventure – 4/25-4/26

  • Special Arbor Day events at the Tree Adventure include tree climbing; face painting; assorted hands-on activities and learning opportunities for all ages.

Arbor Day Family Activities at Lauritzen Gardens – 4/24, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

  • Enjoy a variety of tree-themed educational activities designed for families to learn about a variety of tree topics. The first 100 households will receive a FREE tree seedling! This event is included with regular garden admission and is free for garden members.
  • Children who dress like a tree will get in FREE!

City Sprouts Community Garden (part of Nebraska Science Fest) – 4/26, 12 – 4 p.m.

  • Celebrate Arbor Day with ongoing tours of community garden, urban farm and orchards. Visitors will learn about trees, visit chickens and the hoop house and discover education stations where children can create an arts/craft project and enjoy a healthy snack. FREE with ticket

Sarpy County Earth Day – 4/27, 12 – 4 p.m.

  • Earth Day Celebration will feature a 5K run/walk and 1 mile walk fundraiser, plus exhibitors, youth events, food and demonstrations.

1. Spend an evening driving around to see Amazing Christmas Light Displays in the Omaha Area.

 

2. Drive around Downtown Omaha and enjoy more than 40 blocks of twinkling lights as part of the Holiday Lights Festival.  Visitors are invited to drop off non-perishable food and household items while enjoying the music of talented local groups.

 

3. Stroll along Midtown Crossing and view the decorated windows of Miracle on Farnam (daily through January 1st)

 Gingerbread Houses Omaha

4. View the creative Gingerbread House Display at the Mormon Trail Center where kids can participate in a fun scavenger hunt.  Always a favorite tradition for our family!  (Open 9am-9pm daily through December 29th.  The center closes at 4 p.m. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and will be closed on Christmas.)  Another gingerbread house display is offered at the Kanesville Tabernacle in Council Bluffs.  Gingerbread at the Tabernacle is open through December 31st, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., and closed on Christmas.

 

5. Home Depot Free Kids Workshops are hands-on workshops designed for children ages 5 – 12.  On Saturday, Jan 4, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., kids can make a fun desk calendar!

 

6. View Christmas Stamps from around the world and three Historic Crèche Displays at Christmas at Boys Town.

Public Ice Skating-Ralston Arena

7. Go ice-skating for Free at Ralston Arena December 21st – January 5th! (Skate rental is $3.) Other inexpensive options include ConAgra Foods Ice Skating Rink ($5/person benefits Food Bank for the Heartland) or at Family Skate Night at Motto McClean Ice Arena ($10/family of 4) on December 22nd and 29th from 4:15 – 6:30 p.m. See more ice skating venues in Omaha here!

 

8. Enjoy many fun activities during Winter Break at your local Omaha Community Center. Contact your local Community Center to verify fees and times for all events.

  • Kids can come and get their photo taken with Santa Claus, and families can participate with their children decorating cookies, making a Holiday ornament, or making a greeting card for our U.S. troops overseas. Horse drawn carriage ride tickets can be purchased for a memorable and unique tour of the park.

Story & Cookies with Santa at Best Buy Village Pointe – 12/14, 2 – 3 p.m., FREE

  • Santa and Mrs. Claus will serve up cookies and milk along with a story or two for a special holiday get-together. Best Buy is also offering complimentary photos with Santa.

FREE Admission to Omaha’s Zoo and Aquarium – 12/15

  • Sunday, December 15, 2013 is a Community Free Day at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. Zoo admission is FREE for everyone on that day!

Smile with Santa at Old Navy – 12/15

  • Come take a picture with St. Nick! Bring your smartphone or camera and join us for crafts, treats, deals and more. Include #oldnavysanta on your photo and be featured in our online Santa mosaic.

Happy Holidays Extravaganza at Downtown YMCA – 12/15, 2 – 4 p.m., FREE

In honor of Veterans Day, many attractions and restaurants are offering wonderful discounts and freebies for veterans and active military personnel. Thank you for your service! Most require some form of military ID.  As always, it is a good idea to verify with your favorite location before visiting.

Local Attractions and Events

2013 Nebraska’s Official Veteran Parade – 11/9, 10 a.m.

  • Veteran’s Day Parade – November 9th Old Towne Bellevue. 10 a.m. – Noon.

Military Appreciation Weekend at the Kroc Center – 11/9 – 11/11

  • Free Entry to the Kroc Center for all Military and their Immediate Family on Saturday, November 9, through Veterans Day, Monday, November 11. Please present your official military verification at the Welcome Desk.

Holiday Mail for Heroes – 11/10, 12 – 4 p.m. at Oak View Mall and Westroads Mall

  • The American Red Cross will be collecting holiday greeting cards to send to our heroes overseas and in our own communities. You can join the effort and make a holiday card for a hero this year on Sunday, November 10, in the Food Court.

Veteran’s Day at the Zoo – 11/11

  • Free gate admission to all active or retired Veterans and their immediate families on Veteran’s Day, Monday, November 11, 2013.

Restaurants

Applebees – Veterans and Active Duty Military enjoy a free signature entree on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11th.

Carrabba’s – November 9 – 11.  All active and retired veterans can receive a free appetizer.

Chili’s – Chili’s is offering all veterans and active military personnel a free entree from the special Veterans Day Menu. Offer available November 11, 2013, at participating Chili’s in the U.S. only. Dine in from limited menu only. Beverages and gratuity not included. Veterans and active duty military simply show proof of military service.

Godfathers Pizza La Vista – Veterans and active military will receive a Free buffet! Buffet hours 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Golden Corral – Enjoy a free “Thank You” dinner for any person who has served in the U.S. Military on Monday, November 11, 4 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Hy-Vee – Veterans eat free at their annual Veterans Day breakfast on 11/11. Check your favorite Hy-Vee for times.

Krispy Kreme – Free doughnut and small coffee on November 11, 2013 with military ID. Valid in-store only at participating locations, not valid at grocery or convenience stores.

Little Caesar’s – Free Crazy Bread for U.S. Veterans with valid military ID on Monday, 11/11. Available at participating locations.

Olive Garden – Free meal (with proof of military service) from a list of several entrees on November 11, 2013.

Texas Roadhouse – Fee lunch from special Veterans Menu on Monday November 11, 2013.

Free Entrance to National Parks –  Veterans Day Weekend, November 9-11, 2013.  Over 100 national parks that usually charge entrance fees are offering free entrance.  Find a participating park near you here.
