Full Moon Hike

September 29, 2025

Join for an evening hike on the trails at Hitchcock Nature Center. They’ll start off under the glow of sunset as we hike to the best vantage point to witness the rise of this month’s full moon.

  • $5 per person.
  • Pre-registration is required as space is limited.
  • This program will take place entirely outside and involves walking on hilly, uneven terrain in low light.

20th Annual HawkWatch 5K Walk/Run

September 29, 2025

Welcome to the 19th Annual HawkWatch 5K Walk/Run! Grab your running or walking shoes and join us at Hitchcock Nature Center on Sunday, October 5th. Proceeds support Pottawattamie Conservation’s efforts to preserve habitat in the county and offer low-impact recreational opportunities for the public to enjoy.

The run/walk will utilize Hitchcock Nature Center’s trail system.

Race time:

9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Registration:

  • Now through September 22nd: $30
  • Sept. 23rd to Oct. 5th: $35
  • Online registration closes at 6 PM on 10/4/25

T-shirts:

Guaranteed size until September 22nd. After this date, you may receive a t-shirt, but it might not be the correct size.

Packet pickup:

From 7:30 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. at the Loess Hills Lodge

Swing by the Loess Hills Lodge gallery from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. any Saturday in October to learn more about what their research is uncovering in our gallery displays, enjoy refreshments including lemonade and cookies, and see what raptors are passing through atop the park’s 45-foot observation tower.

A $5 per vehicle entry fee or parks membership is required to enter the park. Thank you!

Hitchcock HawkWatch is a volunteer group that dedicates more than 3,000 hours each year to recording the fall migration of raptors including Red-Tailed Hawks, Bald Eagles, Turkey Vultures, and more.

Fort Atkinson Candlelight Tour

September 29, 2025

Join for the Fort Atkinson Candlelight Tour! This year’s theme is “The Eve of Sgt. Winningham’s Wedding, and the Return of the 1825 Treaty Expedition”.

This unique walking tour by candlelight among the historic buildings and around the grounds will take approximately one and a half hours. Each stop along the way will reveal another part of the evening’s theme, which is based on actual events.

Please wear walking shoes and warm clothing. No flash photography, no flashlights or pets will be allowed during the tour. Refreshments will be served after the tour.

Because space is limited, reservations/tickets are required.

Halloween Day Happenings at Schramm Park SRA

Visit the Treehouse Classroom at Schramm State Recreation Area this Halloween for Halloween-themed activities and learn about why bats, spiders and owls are not as spooky as some people say they are.

We’ll make spooky “Zines” that you can share with friends to teach them
fun facts about some of our favorite nocturnal animals.

Gouge a Gourd at Mahoney State Park

Do pumpkin guts drive you nuts? Check out your pumpkin target precision as you learn how to use the primitive spear throwing device called an atlatl at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park. Who needs foam targets when we’ve got fall pumpkins?

Meet behind the Bur Oak Shelter. This activity is free and open to anyone age six or older. A valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for park entry.

Living History Weekend – Vintage Halloween at Arbor Lodge

September 29, 2025

What are the origins of Halloween traditions? Visit Arbor Lodge to step back in time for Vintage Halloween.

Activities will include History of Halloween traditions displays, games, and hands-on-crafts will be fun for the whole family. During the weekend of October 25-26, Arbor Lodge will host special pumpkin carving demonstrations by Mikel Holland.

In the past, Vintage Halloween was only held on the last weekend of October. However, Arbor Lodge has expanded events this year for an  “All Hallow’s Eve” Celebration across Arbor Day Farm. Visit arbordayfarm.org and look for All Hallow’s Eve for information on the incredible festival planned at Tree Adventure.
