Nebraska Children’s Chorus presents the Bel Canto Alumni Reunion Concert
A beloved chapter in Nebraska’s musical heritage will be celebrated as the Nebraska Children’s Chorus presents the Bel Canto Alumni Reunion Concert, marking the ensemble’s 30th anniversary. This special event will be held on Sunday, July 20 at 3:00 PM at First Central Congregational Church, 421 S 36th Street in Omaha. Admission is free and open to the public, with a reception to follow the performance.
Alumni of the esteemed Bel Canto ensemble will return for an inspiring afternoon of music and remembrance, conducted by celebrated composer and conductor Dr. Z. Randall Stroope. The concert will also feature a performance by Zack A. Peterson, pianist and Bel Canto alumnus, adding a heartfelt layer to this meaningful homecoming.
In a touching nod to legacy and continuity, the concert will also include a special moment where the children of Bel Canto alumni are invited to join in singing during the performance. These second-generation singers will participate in select pieces, symbolizing the enduring impact of the ensemble and the passing of its musical spirit to the next generation.
“The Reunion Concert for Bel Canto (which is still an Omaha treasure) is certainly a chance to reconnect people who share a common love for the arts, and in particular, music,” said Dr. Stroope. “But the scope of the upcoming concert and activities related to it is an acknowledgement of the ensemble’s legacy, relevance in today’s world of youth music-making, and anticipation of that legacy extending far into the future. Our philosophy with the ensemble was and is ‘If you can dream it, then we can do it.’ Those who are fortunate enough to attend this upcoming concert will witness an incredible array of talent, interests, intelligence, and expressive ability.”
This reunion concert is more than a performance — it’s a tribute to the shared experience and enduring legacy of a choir that has shaped countless young musicians. Through powerful harmonies, multigenerational moments, and reflective music, the alumni will honor the spirit of artistic excellence that defines what the Nebraska Children’s Chorus was — and continues to be.
