    Get ready to be a scientist AND an artist! In this workshop, you’ll meet a special soil bacteria called Streptomyces that makes a super cool color-changing pigment. Your mission? Use water and a set of tools to figure out how to pull the color out of the bacteria’s jelly-like home. Once you’ve cracked the code, the real fun begins! You’ll mix and experiment in test tubes to see the color shift and change right before your eyes. Then you’ll use your very own “bacteria ink” to paint a one-of-a-kind masterpiece to take home.

  • Mystery Spice

    Kiewit Luminarium 345 Riverfront Dr, Omaha, NE

    Let’s find out! Participants will smell various spices in their native state and then attempt to identify each spice by smelling the oil of the spice, which has a high concentration of the scent molecules. The structure of the scent chemicals impacts how our neurons detect its scent, and models will be available so participants can connect the microscopic molecular structures to the macroscopic scents.

  • Art in the Park: Cardboard Creations – Butterflies & Flowers

    Kiewit Luminarium 345 Riverfront Dr, Omaha, NE

    In this workshop you will learn how to make butterflies out of cardboard tubes and flowers out of cardboard egg cartons. I will guide you through the steps on how to fold, cut and glue until your butterflies emerge and your flowers bloom into reality. You can then use markers to decorate and design your cardboard creations. When you are all done you can glue on a magnet or mini clothes pin so you can display your creation as you please.   • Art in the Park: Plant-it for the Planet: Printing Plantable Postcards

    In honor of Earth Day, stop by to decorate postcards and compose an inspiring message based upon this year’s theme “Our Power, Our Planet.” Creators will have the opportunity to work with movable type and earth-themed printing blocks to letterpress print the front of a postcard onto plantable seed paper.     In this hands-on biodesign activity, visitors ages 8 and up will explore the fascinating world of biodegradable polymers derived from seaweed. Using alginate, a natural polymer found in large brown algae like kelp, participants mix a custom algae gel and transform it into colorful, squishy strings through a chemical reaction in a calcium bath.

NASA will have a presence at the Kiewit Luminarium RiverFront with space-themed exhibits for the whole family to enjoy, a 53-foot interactive traveling exhibit with games and activations, as well as giveaways. The fun will go from Thursday June 12 – Sunday June 15 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
