For this concert, we’ll be hearing polka music from the Kenny Janak Orchestra.
Join Teaching Artist, Chelsea Herman, as they guide us in the technique of pamphlet stitch binding. This hand-stitched binding is well suited for poetry chapbooks, imagery, and short texts or for creating elegant handbound catalogues, menus, and event keepsakes. Learn different variations of this binding and how each offers unique opportunities for presenting content. Patrons will bind their own pamphlet stitch booklet to take home. Suitable for all experience levels. This is a free event for adults 19+. All materials are provided
Join OPL and Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project for a virtual interactive session! There will be a brief presentation on the significance of the lotus flower and the Lotus Lantern Festival, a step-by-step craft session where participants create their own traditional Korean lotus lantern, and a short documentary on Korea to close the event. This craft is suitable for ages 13+ and younger participants are encouraged to complete the craft with an adult caregiver.
Raise a glass to history and join for an exclusive after-hours Lock-In in the Genealogy & Local History Room! Our theme this year is Prohibition—a time of hidden speakeasies, bootleggers, and secret stories waiting to be uncovered. As OPL hosts their final lock-in at this temporary location, take advantage of uninterrupted research time, explore the stacks, and connect with fellow genealogy enthusiasts who share your passion for uncovering family stories.
There’s something supernatural happening at the library, and we need your help to put the spirits to rest before time runs out! Come solve clues and puzzles based on the haunted history of Omaha, from Hummel Park to the White House Apartments to secret underground mob rings and more. Do you believe in ghosts? This is a free event for adults 19+. Registration is required and opens Sept. 1. Please call 402-444-4800 ext. 3 to register. There will be a session at 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.

Celebrate books and the end of summer at an afternoon of outside festival fun, themed on Laura Numeroff’s picture book series “If You Give A Mouse a Cookie”. There will be games and activities, big trucks, face painting, glitter tattoos, and a special storytime featuring Pancake Pig. Meet us in the parking lot to join the fun! Pancake Pig’s storytime will be held inside the Library Administrative Building at 2 p.m. This is a free event for all ages. All crafts and activities available while supplies last.
Build and decorate a cardboard mannequin in your own (or inspired by your own) likeness. Once you learn this technique, you can build up a whole little world that spans across time and is full of all your favorite people, places, and things! Registration Required
Yōkai, supernatural beings and phenomena from Japanese folklore and popular culture, are at once sinister and friendly, frightening and silly, and completely captivating to the imagination. Join Omaha Public Library and a representative from the Japanese Outreach Initiative for a brief exploration of the history of Yōkai and learn how to craft your own in various Japanese art styles. This is a free event for adults 19+.
What wisdom could your ancestors offer us today? Make 5”x 5” collages to be displayed in spaces that people will encounter in their everyday lives. Share a message intended to provoke, reveal, or call attention to a historical or current issue, event, or system.
Join OPL for a fun and loose storytelling event for adults! Do you have a story about letters? Have you ever sent, received, or found a letter that held special meaning to you or revealed a secret? If you could send a letter to anyone, living or dead, who would it be? What would it say? Prepare a 5-8 minute story related to the theme and come share with the crowd. All participants will be awarded a superlative trophy!
Celebrate World Collage Day with us! Join in and get inspired by four different collage mini workshops led by Omaha-based artists. Each activity will not only encourage you to use your hands to create something new, but will also invite you to examine your own family and explore local history.
Join OPL for a genealogy program laser focused on superheroes. Learn more about the family history of some of your favorite superheroes, discover your superhero name, identify your superhero persona, and gain skills to start your own genealogy research. Celebrate Free Comic Book Day with us and don't forget to grab your free comic book while supplies last. Registration is required and opens April 15. A small string or wind ensemble from the Omaha Symphony will perform music chosen to reflect the musicians’ decision to pursue music and/or their journey to Omaha. Each musician will share their personal story. This is a free event for all ages.
