Three Classic Fairy Tales Come to Life in Disney Live!

November 25, 2013

A collage of performance pictures for Three Classic Fairy Tales Come to Life in Disney Live!

Princesses, Disney songs, plus Mickey, Minnie and friends delighted Omaha families this past weekend at Disney Live! present Three Classic Fairy Tales.  Many little girls were all dressed up in their princess dresses ready to see their favorite come to life!

Goofy, Donald, Minnie, and Mickey welcomed us to the show, and narrated throughout. Each story was beautifully portrayed, with amazing costumes, interchangeable sets, and fun choreography. The quick pace and audience interaction kept my children at the edge of their seats, waiting to see what happened next. The lively performances were filled with dances, creative lighting, and treasured Disney songs.

The first of three shows was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, who thoroughly entertained us with their antics. It was fun to guess who each of the dwarfs were based solely on their fantastic costumes.  The beautiful beloved story of Cinderella followed, with her two silly step-sisters trying to spoil Cinderella’s chance to attend the royal ball.  The show concluded with one of my favorite Disney shows, Beauty and the Beast, highlighted by a fun performance of Be Our Guest.

At the conclusion of the fairy tales, all 3 princesses and princes made a grand entrance in their dazzling gowns.  Even Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, and Donald were all sparkly for the special occasion. It was a wonderful afternoon seeing three Disney Classics being performed on stage.

Kitty Vogt Photography + Discount and Giveaway!

November 5, 2013

Kitty Vogt Photography - 6

The Giveaway has ended, but you can still save $10 off a photo session (only $45!) through the end of the year!

It was a beautiful Fall day, with the sun shining and the leaves exploding with color, a perfect day for our Family pictures. We had a wonderful session with Kitty Vogt Photography, and absolutely love how our photos turned out!

We met Kitty at a picturesque park she knew very well, including where to find all of the perfect little spots for photos. We instantly felt comfortable with her easy-going personality, and she had us laughing right from the start.

My favorite part was that she continued taking pictures in between the posed pictures, capturing us laughing together, hugging, walking towards the next spot, and the kids playing in the leaves. I love these sweet natural moments where she was able to catch their true personalities!

Above all, this photo session was FUN! With little children, sometimes family photos can be stressful, trying to get everyone to look at the camera and put on their happy face, but with Kitty, we were all relaxed and smiling naturally. I felt like I was truly enjoying the moment with my family, and Kitty was able to capture that moment in the beautiful photos.

FOR YOU: Save $10 now off a photo session, PLUS one lucky reader will win a FREE photo session!

I love what I do, I love people, and I love sharing my work with others.

My packages

My sessions are simple! No matter the occasion or subject, I charge $55 for a 1 hour session. That includes about 15 edits from that session, which I provide to you by high quality digital download for you to share, print, and use however you would like. If you want extra edits, more photos, more time, I can add that on as well! I travel, but anything outside of the city of Omaha is an extra travel fee.

Camp Fontanelle Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze – Great Family Fun!

October 18, 2013

A collage of images for the Camp Fontanelle Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze.

Camp Fontanelle Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze, located just north of Fremont, Nebraska, offers great family fun every Fall.

We recently spent a fantastic Fall day visiting Camp Fontanelle. We first visited the area filled with all kinds of yard games including toilet seat tic-tac-toe and ladder golf. The kids loved the bounce house, sandbox, trike track, and petting zoo full of animals!

A fun hayrack ride took us on a tour of the beautiful camp, with the driver stopping along the way describing the history and showing us special points of interest. We were dropped off right by the jumping pillow, which is always a favorite for kids!

The MAiZE

Camp Fontanelle Corn Maze-13

The highlight of our visit was the Corn Maze. The kids loved the challenging scavenger hunt with seven stations hidden around the huge maze. We were happy with the 3 we found, since they were all hidden very well! At the beginning, be sure to ask for the Passport which gives you clues to help you find your way around the maze.

Bloom Where You’re Planted Farm: Wonderful Family Fun!

October 14, 2013

A sign on a green wagon behind a fall display that reads, Bloom Where Your\'re Planted Farm and Pumpkin Patch.

Today, we welcome Sarah H. as a Guest Contributor to Family Fun in Omaha!

Our family had a wonderful day at Bloom Where You’re Planted Pumpkin Patch in Avoca, NE. We visited the family owned & operated Pumpkin patch on a gorgeous September day. It was about a 45 minute drive to Avoca, but the autumn scenery along the way made the drive quite pleasant.

We began our visit on the playground – there are several fun play areas that are perfect for younger visitors. There were also several rows of hay bales for climbing, which both my 3 year old and 13 year old enjoyed. One even had a slide and we all took turns going down!

Bloom Where You're Planted - 1     Bloom Where You're Planted-2

Another definite highlight of the farm was the family sized tire swing. We had a great time being able to swing together – my son’s favorite was spinning, while my daughter enjoyed bumping into the support posts. For those not into the rough & tumble action of the tire swing, there is a regular swingset, as well as a porch style swing.

The hayrack ride – always a popular pumpkin patch activity – runs twice an hour. We took a short but lovely drive out to the field, where most of the pumpkins were already off the vines (a huge plus for me, since those pumpkin vines are always prickly!!) The kids each picked out a pumpkin – one orange, one white, and we headed back to the main part of the farm.

Bloom Where You're Planted-3

I don’t think it’s possible to visit a pumpkin patch without sampling some fall snacks and Bloom Where You’re Planted did not disappoint! We headed over to the Schoolhouse Café and tried what their website refers to as their “famous homemade frosted sugar cookie”. Believe me – the cookies lived up to the hype!

Bloom Where You're Planted-4

After refueling, we wandered around in the Pumpkin Barn & Gift Shop. They have a fun and eclectic collection of items, as well as popcorn and additional snacks in the gift shop. In the Pumpkin Barn, we found a wide variety of pumpkins and gourds on display. My favorite part was their use of real Radio Flyer Wagons to transport your pumpkins while on site – so cute!

Bloom Where You're Planted-5     Bloom Where You're Planted-6

While at the farm, we also enjoyed the Rubber Duck Races, Word Scavenger Hunt (we didn’t “officially” participate in this activity, but found it fun to spot the words placed around the farm) and the Gourd Garden. My three year old son especially liked all the open space that he had to run around – and the multiple play areas. My 13 year old daughter enjoyed petting the horses and was pleased to find the perfect white pumpkin that she plans to paint.

Admission is $5.00/person (including tax) and children 2 and under are free. Bloom Where You’re Planted is open on Fridays from 1 – 6pm and Saturdays & Sundays from 10am – 6pm until October 31, 2013. We had a great time visiting and think your family will, too!

Disclosure: Many thanks to Sarah for being a guest contributor, and to Bloom Where You’re Planted Farm who provided the passes to facilitate the review. They are a Featured Omaha Area Pumpkin Patch.

Sing and Dance at Little Musicians in Motion!

October 10, 2013

Children playing with a parachute at Sing and Dance at LIttle Musicians in Motion.

Sing, move, dance, clap, and play instruments! Little Musicians in Motion is a mommy and me, and/or daddy and me, musical jamboree class for children aged 4 months to 6 years who enjoy singing, dancing, and making music with instruments!

Open Gym

We recently participated in an Open Gym. Melinda, the owner and teacher, is very friendly, enthusiastic, and easy-going. Her energy was contagious, and she had fun herself singing the songs and leading the motions. She learned the children’s names quickly and involved each of them actively in the class.

Little Musicians in Motion

We began Open Gym time with a Car Wash, where each child participated in some way. All of the children loved the bubbles that filled the air. Even the littlest ones were involved!

Each child was then given a little jungle animal while we sang The Jungle Song. We practiced animal sounds, learned the signs for each animal, and played musical instruments together.

One of the kids’ favorite activities was the Bounce House (I wish we had these when we were little!). While the children took turns in the bounce house, Melinda kept everyone engaged while leading a song and jumping to the beat.

Little Musicians in Motion 3

The drums were a big hit. The children loved playing the drums fast, slow, soft, hard – following Melinda’s lead and playing to the music. The fun-filled hour ended with all sorts of games with the parachute.

Melinda kept the class moving, one song or activity to the next for the entire hour. All of the children from 13 months to 4 years old were engaged, and the Moms were all involved playing along with their children. When I asked my son what part he liked the most, he said he didn’t like any part, he liked all of it!

  • Open Gym Times: Check Little Musicians in Motion on Facebook for upcoming dates and times, with a different theme each week.
  • Cost: $5 for the first child, $2 for each additional child
  • Location: 19102 Q St.
  • Email to reserve your spot: [email protected]

Little Musicians in Motion Classes

Love the Open Gym time? Many class sessions are offered for 45-minutes for 10 weeks.

The Winter Session runs November 18th – February 10th (breaks during Thanksgiving Week (11/25-12/1) and Christmas Week (12/23-1/5)). Not ready to sign up for a 10 week session? Check the class schedule and feel free to drop in to any class with an open spot. Single classes cost $15.00 per class.

Kansas City’s Union Station – Fun for the Whole Family!

August 12, 2013

A close up of the sign for Kansas City\'s Union Station.

This summer, we enjoyed one of our first family vacations. A large flag hanging in a long hall of windows at Kansas City\'s Union Station.Kansas City was a perfect destination, not too long of a road trip for the little people, but filled with enough fun and adventure that makes us wanting to return again soon.

One of our main stops was Union Station, Kansas City’s fully restored landmark. This beautiful building now houses restaurants, shops, and many fun attractions.

Science City

Science City was an amazing adventure for our entire family.  It is FULL of hands-on science activities and exhibits, engaging kids and adults of all ages for hours. It is spacious enough where we were able to interact with activities on our own and did not feel crowded, even though it was a busy Friday with a summer camp going on.

Science City KC

Our kids loved the Kinderlab, perfectly suited for their little hands and bodies. We watched snakes being fed in The Nature Center, dug in the Dinosaur Dig Site, crawled through the underground pipes, played the piano with our feet, simulated flying through the air in a helicopter, played in a treehouse, and watched other visitors try the Sky Bike, suspended on a highwire 30 feet above the ground. Mr. E Hotel challenged us with more than 21 different illusions.

Plus, with our Omaha Children’s Museum, we received Free Admission as part of their Reciprocal Membership Program!

Model Railroad Experience

A close up of a model train display at Kansas City\'s Union Station.

No visit to Union Station is complete without a visit to the Model Railroad Experience. See 8,000 square feet of toy trains including tiny N-scale model trains to the big G-scale trains. The Model Railroad Experience is FREE with any Union Station ticket!

Real Pirates

Real Pirates, a traveling exhibition from National Geographic, tells the story of The Whydah, and her conversion from slave ship to one of the most successful pirate ships in the early 1700s. The Whydah is the first fully authenticated pirate ship discovered in U.S. waters.

A text for the Real Pirates story at Kansas City\'s Union Station.

Upon entering, visitors watch a brief movie describing the background story behind the Real Pirates. This leads to a unique introduction to the exhibit, where you feel as if you are part of the story, learning about the pirates who were on the ship, how they lived, their backgrounds, and how they interacted with one another on the ship. ‘Real’ pirates walk around sharing their own tales and answering questions.

In this interactive exhibit, visitors will see a gallery of artifacts including real pirate coins, hoist the Jolly Roger, learn to tie nautical knots, walk through a ship replica, and learn the science behind restoring these artifacts.

I would personally recommend this exhibit for adults and older children who can better understand the history behind The Whydah. Visitors also have the option of purchasing a wand which might be helpful in following the exhibit.

Visiting Real Pirates:

  • June 22nd through January 5th, Hours
  • Tickets range from $14.50-$18.95, with special discounts for members

Disclosure: Many thanks to Union Station who provided tickets for my family to attend Real Pirates. All opinions are my own. See disclosure and privacy policy here.

Nature Connects LEGO® Exhibit at Lauritzen Gardens Review + Giveaway!

February 6, 2013

A large yellow and black butterfly made from Lego blocks at Nature Connects Lego Exhibit at Lauritzen Gardens.

Lauritzen Gardens comes alive once again with beautiful colors, intricate creations, and natural surroundings in the amazing Nature Connects exhibit.  This time it is with nearly half a million LEGO® pieces used to create 27 elaborate sculptures.  As we strolled through the indoor exhibit, it felt as if we were in an outdoor art studio.A group of birds at a bird feeder made from Lego blocks at Nature Connects Lego Exhibit at Lauritzen Gardens.

I remember playing with LEGO® bricks when I was little, building forts, houses, and towers, only to knock them down and start all over again.  To see these creations with such detail, delicate angles, and unique use of LEGO® pieces (check out the frog’s eyes – very cool!) left us often questioning, how did he do that?  Look closer, and you can see each LEGO® brick carefully selected and positioned.

My favorite sculpture was the Goldfinches, the one with the fewest amount of pieces.  Each bird was positioned differently in the birdfeeder preparing to get their food, which was, of course, made of LEGO® bricks, too.  The Lawn Mower was a close second because of the detail and true appearance.  Apparently, at one of the previous locations of this exhibit, the Lawn Mower was placed up on a hill.  Many people passed by it assuming it was real, and not part of the exhibit!

Create Your Own LEGO® Sculptures

A group of children building with Lego blocks at Nature Connects Lego Exhibit at Lauritzen Gardens.

After being inspired by all of the amazing sculptures, we all had the opportunity in two locations to build our own creations using a variety of LEGO® pieces of all shapes and sizes.  My son was so proud of his airplane that swooshed through the air!  Families worked together to spell out their names, build the highest tower, and create new masterpieces.  It was so much fun!

Nature Connects is open 9am to 5pm daily through May 19th.  Admission is $6 for adults through March ($7 beginning in April), $3 for children 6-12.  Enjoy these additional events at Lauritzen Gardens during Nature Connects:

  • Build-a-breakfast with LEGO® bricks and EGGO® waffles, Saturdays and Sundays from February 2 through May 19, 10am-2pm.
  • Orchid Show – Saturday, March 2, and Sunday, March 3, 10am-4pm.  Pick up a $1 off admission coupon at Lauritzen Gardens.
  • Lego® Brick Sculpture Invitational – March 17.  Bring your own LEGO® brick sculpture to exhibit at the garden for a chance to win great prizes.  All participants will receive a complimentary pass to Lauritzen Gardens to use on the day of the exhibit (two passes for exhibitors 17 and under). Register by March 14.  This sounds like so much fun!
  • Celebrate with a LEGO® Brick Birthday Party at the Gardens.

5 Excellent Reasons to Visit the Omaha Zoo in the Winter

January 16, 2013

A group of baby large cats at the Omaha Zoo.

We love to visit the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in the Winter.  Although wonderful to visit at all times of the year, visiting during the Winter offers a different experience than other times of the year.

5 Excellent Reasons to Visit the Omaha Zoo in the Winter:

Amazing Indoor Exhibits

Most of the Omaha Zoo’s major attractions are housed indoors, and are fairly close to one another.  Enjoy the balmy Desert Dome, Lied Jungle, and Butterfly Pavilion.  Stroll through the impressive Kingdoms of the Night.  Watch the gorillas play in Gorilla Valley.  Walk through the newly renovated Aquarium.  For a moment, you might just forget it is winter outside.

Less crowds

The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium brought in record crowds last year, which will only continue to increase as more and more people come to visit the best zoo in the country!  In the Winter, there are many times we are the only visitors in an entire building.  The little ones can get up close to the windows and see all of the animals easily.  Additionally, with fewer crowds, it seems that the animals are actually more active.

IMAX Theater

With a zoo membership, the IMAX Theater is free!  Choose from 3 shows daily.

Peacefulness

With less crowds, there is less noise, less activity around you.  There is a wonderful sense of peacefulness, the sense you get when being out in nature.  The last time we visited, we walked through the entire Kingdoms of the Night exhibit by ourselves, not another person in sight.  We could clearly hear all of the wonderful sounds of the animals while walking through the swamp – it almost felt like we were really there.

Baby Animals

Five African lions cubs (pictured above), two males and three females, were born on December 29, 2012.  With smaller crowds, we were able to stay and watch the 2-week-old cubs up close, and observe one being fed from a bottle.  This is reason enough to visit this Winter!

Looking for more Winter fun?  Enjoy 80+ Things to Do in Omaha this Winter (Many Free!)!  New to the Zoo?  Be sure to read Helpful Tips for Visiting!

Santa’s Magic at the Omaha Children’s Museum – Wonderful Holiday Fun!

December 14, 2012

A woman dressed as a fairy at Santa\'s Magic at the Omaha Children\'s Museum.

Imagine seeing snowflakes dancing across the room to the music of Mannheim Steamroller…  A beautiful Snow Queen appearing before your children, and watching their eyes fill with excitement as it begins to snow… Then Ho, Ho, Ho, you hear Santa arrive down the chimney, and greet each child by name as he listens to their wish list!

Enjoy all of this plus more at Santa’s Magic at the Omaha Children’s Museum, a fun Holiday show for the child in all of us!  My kids loved meeting Holly the Elf and dancing with her to the Holiday music.  They were mesmerized by the dancing snowflakes on the wall, and very excited to see the Snow Queen.  The snow falling and Santa’s arrival highlighted the exciting show.

Santa comes down the chimney multiple times daily through December 23rd.  You will receive a ticket for your preferred show time at the front desk. Professional photos are available for purchase.  Show times are:

Tuesday – Friday: 10:30am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, and 2:30pm
Saturday: 10:30am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, 2:30pm, and 3:30pm
Sunday: 1:30pm, 2:30pm, and 3:30pm

Santa’s Magic is included with regular paid admission to the museum, or free for members. (Hint: Memberships make perfect Christmas gifts, and right now, if you buy an annual membership as a gift, you will receive 4 Free passes to Family Fun Center XL when purchased by December 31, 2012.)

While there, be sure to visit the amazing exhibit, Itty Bitty City!  Inspired by places in the Omaha area, this fun exhibit offers kids a variety of experiences to explore, climb, play dress-up, drive, build, ride, cook, and learn.  Read about our fun visit to Itty Bitty City here!

A visit to the Omaha Children’s Museum is always engaging, creative, active, and full of fun, and now it can become truly magical with a visit to Santa’s Magic!
